“Mehri” is a performance at the intersection of dance, theater, and cricket. Dance artist and performer Sudesh Adhana (based in Oslo, originally from India), in collaboration with director Pia Maria Roll, is developing a solo performance that draws on the movements and context of cricket. Through a playful and sensitive approach, the piece explores how the British colonization of India has led to transgenerational traumas.
Sudesh is an avid cricket player himself, and the sport is immensely popular in his home country, India (as well as among many in Norway with backgrounds from former British colonies such as Pakistan and Sri Lanka). However, as cricket was introduced by the colonial power, it also raises many questions and reflections. Sudesh’s father, whose nickname was Mehri, was born before India’s independence and strongly disliked the sport. Drawing from both historical and personal perspectives, Sudesh and Pia aim to inspire reflection on inherited trauma, both in society and on an individual level. They wish to reach a broad audience, especially those who do not typically engage with performing arts. Through the familiar physicality of sports, they hope to create an entry point into contemporary dance and theater.
